I wear a dark navy blue 100% cotton uniform and patrol outdoors. The uniforms are expensive because they are custom-made; they are like a polo shirt, but include patch pockets, room for a ballistic vest, and embroidery.
In the summer sun, the color does not last long; the fades to a bronze-like color. You instinctively try to brush the bronze off, thinking it’s dirt. But it’s not dirt.
When the uniforms become unsightly, I take them to Gentex to get them re-dyed. The results are not guaranteed because of variations in the initial fabric. However, re-dye is worth a shot because the uniforms are otherwise unusable. So far, three re-dyes have each had excellent results. Caution: make sure your embroidery company uses poly thread. If they use cotton thread, the dye will attach to it.
Again, faced with serviceable uniforms and no alternative, Gentex’s re-dye service offers a great chance to renew the uniforms at a reasonable cost, far less than new uniforms. Nothing to lose other than the reasonable dye service fee.
